When life is always go go go the importance of a place where you can find peace is greater than ever
What Makes a Happy Place?
The characteristics of a happy place can be extremely varied but the common factors are easy to trace: A happy place is a place where you feel most at peace. Where you're able to feel that lift off of your shoulders when you exhale. Where stress falls away and you are left feeling a little more whole than you did before.
While the things that make up a happy place are far from tangible, at least when being generalized, we can still come up with a decent list of qualifications for you to check off when deciding if you've found one (not that you really need a list, but hey, maybe you've never had a happy place and have no idea what it would be like in the first place)
I'd be more specific if I could, but happy places are as different as the people that have them, so it's up to you to find out what really makes a place "happy" for you.
Why You Need One
If you don't have an issue with anxiety, maybe this article isn't for you, but if you're a human then chances are pretty high that stress is getting to you. In a big way. There are plenty of ways to decompress stress, and generally all of them take place in what someone would label as their happy place. Instead of listing off the benefits of a happy place (which I feel are already obvious) I will instead list off the negative effects of stress on the human body, and you can tell me if you think finding a place to let that stress go is important
These are just a few of the ways that stress can impact you physically and mentally. You could probably take a look at a few of these list items and connect them to linked issues that aren't included here, and those are still just a small taste of the harm that high stress levels can do.
Trust me, you're gonna want to avoid those. As much as you can.
A few classic examples
So you know the reasons to have a happy place, but where do you start? Unless you already have a place in mind, finding the right go-to can be hard. To help you along here are a few ideas to get you started:
The Great Outdoors
This could be anywhere outside; your mother's garden, a mountain trail, a park down the street. Being outside in general has been shown to already decrease stress levels dramatically, so by all means, go anywhere, but eventually you'll find that one place. And something about it will just pull you in. And you'll have found the place where your heart feels at home.
It is equally common for people to find their comfort somewhere public. Peace in the middle of all of the noise. Popular options are coffee shops, libraries, public access government buildings (think capital buildings and monuments) etc..
The Comfort of Home
Of course your home should be your happy place. But even better is to give yourself a specific happy space within. Whether that be a comfy chair with a soft blanket, or your bed with a thousand throw pillows, or on the floor in the corner of a random room. Create a space inside your home where you can feel not just safe and happy, but peaceful. Associate that space with rest and a calm demeanor, and you'll find that you've given yourself the best home makeover you ever could.
Whether you already have 5 happy places ready at any given time, or you have yet to find one, take some time today to allow yourself to relax. You truly deserve it.
